Alferd Packer Memorial Grill Offers Beefy Finger Foods

BOULDER, Colo. (Wireless Flash) -- Colorado's most notorious cannibal is beefing up the menu at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

The school's University Memorial Center features a restaurant called the Alferd Packer Memorial Grill, named after the infamous Colorado cannibal, who, in 1874, killed and ate five of his traveling companions in the Rocky Mountains.

According to UMC Food Service Director Shannon Evins, students and faculty get a kick out of the cannibal-themed grill and its tasty finger foods and clever slogan, "Have A Friend For Lunch."

The "cannibal-icious" chow includes meaty panini sandwiches, El Canibal-Mexican specialties like beefy burritos, and chunky chili.

The heart of the grill is an area called Slumgullion Pass -- named after the mountain spot where Packer ate his pals -- which offers hearty breakfasts, burgers, and fries.

While there are several vegetarian options for those who have beef with beef, Evins says their fleshy foods are the most popular.

"Our burgers outsell everything else on the menu," she said. "I think Alferd would be proud of that!"

The grill's decor features a map of Packer's travels and a stone bust of Packer himself.

Evins says students have fun with Packer's bust by putting actual food in its mouth and dressing it up in vacation gear during Spring break.
