Web Site Exposes Roommates As Dicks

LOS ANGELES (TNA) – Craigslist is a fine place to rant about your roommate, but unfortunately your post has to share space with tirades about men, women, bosses, and the bane of all Rants & Rave readers: the stealth hard-on photo.
Now, spiteful roommates the world over have someplace else to go.

MyRoommateIsADick.blogspot.com, launched in early September, is a Web site where pissed off roommates can, pardon the pun, air their dirty laundry.
Apparently, there are a lot of disgruntled roommates, or people who can relate: In a mere two weeks, the site has exploded in popularity, and, according to its owners, receives about 40,000 hits per day.
With a modest, low-tech layout, MyRoommateIsADick posts short, anonymously-submitted rants and photos exposing roommates for the dicks that they are.
One post, for example, lambastes a female roommate for leaving “jizz rags” beneath a pile of laundry that she neglected to wash for the time she lived in the apartment. According to the poster, the rags stuck to the carpet, ruining it – yet the roommate had the nerve to bill the poster for half the cost of a new carpet.
Another post lights up a female roommate for being a “drama dick” (“If I have to hear about how NO ONE loves you one more f*cking time and how f*cking fat you are I will puke in your OCD cleaned room.”), while another rips into a roommate for masturbating to gay porn while in the poster’s room … using the poster’s computer.
Other rants deal with the usual issues that set off roommates: filthy common areas and loud sex (not to mention loud common areas and filthy sex), house guests who overstay their welcome, and missing food.
“We just want to make people laugh,” says Paul (who declined to give his last name), one of three guys behind the site. “We also want to provide a place for people to vent passive aggressively.”
It was a recent ex-roommate who provided the inspiration for the site. Paul and his other roommate not only wanted to vent about how he left newspapers around the house and stacked the trash too high, but expose his faults to the world.
Paul, 29, actually got along well with the recent ex-roommate, adding that he’s lived with far shoddier. “The worst was a guy who had a girlfriend who never left the apartment,” he says. “She was also a compulsive smoker and eater.” (He solved the problem by moving out.)
MyRoommateIsADick A roommate who puts labels on every single item in the fridge is definitely a dick.
“We want the site to become a talking point, like ‘OverheardInNewYork.com,’” he says, referring to a popular blog that posts snippets of conversation overheard in New York City.
Posting about an annoying roommate may be cathartic, but it’s not the most constructive way to resolve a conflict.
Laurie Puhn, a legal mediator, attorney, and author of “Instant Persuasion: How to Change Your Words to Change Your Life” (Tarcher), advocates dealing with roommate issues head on.
“Don’t hold on to it for a long time,” she says. “Deal with something when it’s smaller, and when you do deal with it, have a solution. Let the person save face.”
However, she emphasizes that all roommate situations require flexibility. “That’s what rooming with someone means: You can’t have your way.”
So far, no “dicks” have written in to MyRoommateIsADick to complain about being exposed. Paul knows, however, that given the popularity of the site, the time will probably come.
“There could be a lot of really upset roommates out there,” he says.
To prepare for the backlash, the site has a disclaimer promising that when a dick does write in that the publishers will remove the posting. “But you’re still a dick roommate,” the disclaimer concludes.
