Girls Gone Viral
FEBRUARY 8, 2008
HOLLYWOOD (TNA) – A film starring drag queens who portray nasty cougars that brag over how many times they’ve been raped is likely to get attention. And that’s the idea for the creators of “Girls Will Be Girls,” a ribald new series of comedy shorts offered for free online.
They’re hoping the film becomes girls-gone-viral.
The cast and creators of “Girls Will Be Girls” rose to relative fame back in 2003, when they released an indy movie by the same name, featuring actors in drag playing two broken-down Hollywood actresses named Coco and Evie.
The film premiered at The Sundance Film Festival and became a cult hit, receiving numerous honors, including four 2003 OUTfest Grand Jury Awards.![]()

The creators hoped to parlay the movie into a sequel or television series. However, the humor was raw and edgy and few studios were willing to bite.
"We've never been able to get one off the ground because television is a cautious and conservative business," said Richard Day, Writer and Director of Girls Will Be Girls.
It’s easy to see why. The first two shorts, "The Jizz Party" and "Delivering Coco," feature the continuing exploits of characters Evie and Coco, played by Jack Plotnick (who played a rental car agent in “Meet the Fockers”) and Clinton Leupp in deliciously camp drag.
They kvetch about sex and alcohol abuse with a witty, jagged edge. In “Delivering Coco,” for example, Evie learns that Ann (Coco’s mother, played by Scott Thompson of “Kids in the Hall” fame) is suffering from liver failure and wants half of Coco's liver.
Trouble is, Evie wants it too. Evie doesn't need a new liver yet, but she is a heavy drinker, and, according to Evie, "one this clean almost never comes on the market."
Evie and Ann battle for Coco's liver, and, as a theme throughout the series, Coco suffers the most.
Then there’s the bit about being raped. As Ann criticizes Coco for her “lumpen” body, she brags, “I was raped three times at Dartmouth.”
“I’ve been raped … recently,” Coco states with wounded pride.
“I’m surprised he hasn’t pressed charges,” Ann sniffs.
“I have a rape whistle,” Evie chimes in. “Some nights, I blow and I blow, but no one comes.”
The webisodes, Day explains, are the cast and crew’s way of directly reaching their audience. “No one can tell any of us we can't do certain material,” he adds, “so we're free to be as outrageous as we like."
Says Leupp, in character as Coco, “I do hope that as you watch these new shorts, you’ll get a little laugh, or in the very least … get a little nauseous.”
Indeed, a viral video can make a person laugh … or make them sick.
