Self-Loathe Like The Stars
MARCH 14, 2008
NEW YORK (Wireless Flash) -- Celebrities hate themselves, and so can you!
That's the premise of a new book, "Self-Loathing for Beginners" (Santa Monica Press), parodies the self-help genre by offering hilarious tips to achieve happiness through hating yourself.AP Photo/ CharlesRexArbogast/file 'Self-Loathing for Beginners' author Lynn Phillips says self-loathing celebs like Oprah Winfrey teach important lessons about achieving happiness through hating yourself.
According to author Lynn Phillips, the best role models are in the celebrity spotlight.
Phillips outlines several celebrity self-loathers, including Angelina Jolie, who compensates for her self- loathing by doing good humanitarian deeds, and Oprah Winfrey, who teaches others to be thin and glamorous while fighting the same battle herself.
There are also icons like Janet Jackson, who constantly creates new selves to spite, and high-powered politicians like Dick Cheney, who Phillips calls "Self-loathing impaired" because he can't understand what there is to hate about himself.
"The whole purpose of celebrity culture is that they're better than you," he said. "But they hate themselves too. It's a vicious cycle."
If you want a head start on hating yourself, Phillips recommends turning off the TV and looking in the mirror, saying, "Start with the body, it can't fight back."
