High Cost Of Laughing No Joke
MARCH 26, 2008
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (Wireless Flash) -- Economic times are tough these days, and we're even paying big bucks for yucks.
That's the serious scoop from Malcolm Kushner, a California-based humor consultant who annually releases his "Cost Of Laughing Index," a compilation of 16 leading humor indicators including the price of admission to comedy clubs, rubber chickens, whoopee cushions, and Groucho glasses.![]()
Phatcontroller/Flickr.com The cost of laughter has risen 4 percent since last year, but, thankfully, the price of rubber chickens remains the same.
This year, the cost of laughing has increased by 4 percent, evident in the steep prices of singing telegrams, which are costing funny folks $100 more than last year.
Meanwhile, the price for a pink gorilla or dancing chicken telegram clucks in at a whopping $250.
The fee for writing a half-hour TV sitcom has also skyrocketed, costing a pricey $15,482, while the cover price for an issue of "MAD" magazine has jumped from $3.99 to $4.99.
But there's still a reason to smile: The cost for a dozen rubber chickens stays at a firm $51, while Groucho glasses and whoopee cushions also remain at the same price as last year.
