New Survey Crunches Fruit-Eating Facts
AUGUST 2, 2007
REEDLEY, Calif. (TNA) – When it comes to eating summer fruits like peaches, plums and nectarines, Americans fall into three distinct groups: crunchers, leaners and in-betweeners.
According to data crunched by the California Tree Fruit Agreement, 17 percent of Americans are crunchers and pick their fruit based on its firmness.
Meanwhile, 33 percent are leaners, and gobble their fruit in a manner that minimizes juice getting all over their outfits. They also favor softer fruits when they’re shopping for produce.
Fifty percent of Americans are in-betweeners and prefer fruit that is just moist enough to enjoy without dribbling.
Other fruity facts harvested from the plum crazy poll:
n Men are more likely to be crunchers than women. About 18 percent of guys pick firm fruit compared to only 11 percent of women.
n 35 percent of folks in southern states are big fans of juicy fruits, compared to 27 percent of people who live in the North Central part of the United States.
n Finally, while many oldsters are dining with dentures, that isn’t stopping them from choosing to chew firm fruits: 21 percent of people older than 65 consider themselves crunchers, compared to only 11 percent of fruit lovers between the ages of 25 and 34.
